Fragments Beyond the Gate

After visiting Gouda’s historic cheese market, we continued walking through the city before returning to the train station. We followed a street beside one of the canals and eventually reached De Gouwekerk, an imposing church that stood apart from the smaller buildings surrounding it.

Near the church, a narrow street intersected our path. As we turned to check for traffic before crossing, we noticed a gate between two walls. Trees and dense foliage could be seen beyond it, suggesting a space that felt unexpectedly secluded from the rest of the street.

Something about it did not seem to belong to the environment we had been walking through. The surrounding buildings had formed a continuous urban landscape, but this entrance offered only fragments of what existed behind it: the gate, the walls, the shaded path and glimpses of greenery. Our curiosity led us closer.

From there, we could see the passage more clearly. Fallen leaves covered parts of the path, while the surrounding foliage created a cool and sheltered atmosphere. At the end stood a distinctive red door, illuminated just enough to draw the eye through the darkness. Although the gate prevented us from entering, the place felt peaceful rather than inaccessible.

At the time, I did not know that this was the Remonstrantse Poortje, the surviving entrance to a former Remonstrant church. The church that once stood beyond it was eventually demolished, but its entrance was preserved as part of Gouda’s local history. What had first appeared to be an unusual interruption in the street was actually a threshold leading into a place that no longer existed in the same form.

Perhaps that history was part of what I sensed without understanding it. The passage felt quiet, protected and somehow removed from the present. The red door appeared to be waiting at the end, while the path invited the imagination to continue beyond what could be seen.

We remained there for a few moments, enjoying the shade and stillness before continuing our walk. Learning the history later changed how I understood the photograph. What had attracted me was not only the colour or the foliage, but the way the entrance had remained, preserving the presence of something that was no longer there and waiting for anyone passing by to stop and notice it.
