What Will the New Day Bring?

Sintra is a place where nature, geography and architecture seem to exist in harmony. Its wooded mountains, historic buildings and distinctive location have inspired visitors for generations. Lord Byron once described it as a “glorious Eden,” a phrase that still feels appropriate when experiencing the town today.

While visiting the National Palace of Sintra, there was much to admire in its rooms, passageways and architectural details. Yet, among everything competing for my attention, it was a relatively simple window that made me stop.

Earlier that morning, dense fog had covered the higher parts of the mountain. By the time we reached the palace, it had dissipated, leaving only a cloudy sky. Although the humidity made the day feel warmer outside, the interior of the palace remained comfortably cool.

The heavy wooden shutters and dark interior framed two narrow views filled with light. Through them, I could see the rooftops and buildings of the town layered against the green hillside. Far below, people moved through the streets. Sintra was busy without feeling overwhelmingly crowded, and from that elevated position, the activity appeared almost miniature.

Curiosity first drew me toward the window. As I came closer, it gave way to surprise and then to joy. The view revealed another side of the town, one that could not be experienced from the streets below. It also created a sense of anticipation for everything that might still be waiting beyond the palace walls.

Standing there, I began to wonder how many people had paused at the same window before me. Members of the royal household, palace workers and generations of visitors may all have looked through this opening at different moments in their lives. The town outside would have changed, but perhaps the feelings of curiosity and expectation were not so different.
