A Labyrinth of Sand and Sea

This photograph was taken during our first and, so far, only visit to Iceland. We have often spoken about returning because the country left an impression unlike anywhere else we have visited. Its vast, open landscapes felt remarkably natural and untouched, and travelling through them by car gave us the freedom to experience places we had previously known only through photographs.

Before the trip, we had planned which areas we could visit during our time in the country. One of them was Reynisfjara, the famous black sand beach. We arrived at approximately three in the afternoon. The sky was overcast, although the sunlight appeared occasionally through the clouds, subtly changing the colours and reflections across the shoreline.

It was my first time seeing a volcanic sand beach. Walking on it felt almost like walking on gravel. The sand was dense and heavy beneath my feet, and every step produced a noticeable sound. The wind was not particularly strong, but the air felt cold, adding to the sense that we had arrived somewhere distant and unfamiliar.

The sea did not appear violent, but it was certainly not calm. The waves carried enough force to break down volcanic material over time, and their movement could be heard as the water and dark fragments shifted against one another. We walked for a while to become familiar with the area, but it was the kind of place that eventually made us stop to look toward the horizon, feel the cold breeze and watch the water repeatedly approach and retreat from the shore.

What first caught my attention was the unusual tonality created by the changing light, the water and the volcanic sand. The wet surface developed an almost metallic appearance, moving between shades of blue, silver and black. As each wave receded at a different speed, the backwash divided into narrow streams that crossed, separated and rejoined across the beach.

An infinite number of patterns seemed to emerge. Some resembled ripples, while others formed channels, curves and intricate geometric shapes. They appeared carefully planned, yet they had been created through the continuous and unpredictable movement of the sea. Every returning wave could alter them, erase them or begin an entirely new design.

That contrast is what remained with me: nature revealing a sense of perfection through an apparently random process. The water was continuously sculpting and decorating the shoreline without following a visible plan, creating order and complexity one wave at a time. For a brief moment, the sand and sea formed a labyrinth that could never be repeated in exactly the same way.
