More Than What Is Evident

Huron Natural Area is a beautiful conservation area within walking distance of our home. It is a place we visit often to walk in nature, observe wildlife and experience the changing colours and character of each season.

One Saturday morning in January, I woke to one of those unusually dense foggy days. A fog advisory was in effect across the region, and after a surprisingly mild winter, I became curious about how the familiar landscape might look under those conditions. I decided to walk to the conservation area and bring my camera with me.

The air felt damp, and the fog had transformed everything. Even the places I knew well seemed unfamiliar, as though I had arrived somewhere new. Because it was early on a weekend morning, few visitors were there. The quiet gave me the freedom to slow down, move at my own pace and look at the usual surroundings with different eyes.

When I reached the lake, its surface was frozen. Pine, ash and maple trees surrounded it, but the fog softened their forms and reduced the distinctions between the shoreline, ice and sky. On a clear day, each element would have occupied its own recognizable place within the landscape. In the fog, those boundaries began to disappear.

The trees, lake and ice seemed to blend into one another. The farther I looked, the less certain the landscape became. Details were not concealed all at once; they weakened slowly until shapes and boundaries appeared to dissolve. The fog had not changed the place itself, yet it had completely changed my perception of it.

That transformation was what made me stop and take the photograph. A landscape I had seen many times was offering something different, not because anything new had been added, but because the familiar had been allowed to reveal itself in another way.

For me, this image represents what we can discover when we give things enough time to present themselves. We often spend so much energy trying to reach a desired result or force an expected outcome that we overlook what may be emerging at its own pace. Sometimes we simply need to be patient, remain attentive and allow the details to appear, or disappear, before we can recognize that there is more than what is evident.
