Where Stillness Begins

We were travelling through Italy on our way to Slovenia when we decided to make a stop in Trieste before crossing the border. To this day, this beautiful city holds a special place in my heart.

I believe one of the best ways to discover a city is to walk through its streets, visit local stores, and spend time in the places frequented by the people who live there. It was a hot day, so we began exploring later in the afternoon.

Trieste has a strong connection to the sea, and I knew we should be near the port before sunset. Many others seemed to have the same idea. People gathered in the plazas, walked along the waterfront, or sat on the pier, talking and enjoying the view and one another’s company.

You could hear the water, the seagulls, and the conversations around you, while a fresh breeze arrived from the sea. The sky was cloudy, with only a few clear openings. As the sun began to set, a strong yellow light appeared along the horizon. Then, as it moved lower, beautiful lilac tones began to emerge, creating a delicate gradient across the sky. The colours reflected on the silky surface of the water, transforming the scene into something that felt almost imaginary.

Somehow, everything became quieter to me. It felt as though the world had paused for a moment or taken a deep breath.

After taking a few photographs, there was nothing left for me to do but remain there and experience it. I stayed until the light faded and the changing colours signalled that night was beginning once again.

Where Stillness Begins represents the opportunities we have in life to pause and experience a moment through our senses. Perhaps this is why Trieste continues to hold such a special place in my life: the city gave me the opportunity to pause and enjoy a beautiful moment, and I chose to take it.
