Where Time and Depth Intersect

Sintra felt unlike anywhere else we encountered in Portugal. Its architecture, landscape and atmosphere seemed to occupy a place somewhere between history and imagination.

At Quinta da Regaleira, we entered an estate surrounded by high walls. The palace resembled a castle, while its expansive gardens contained winding pathways, stone structures, tunnels and unexpected architectural details. Exploring the grounds felt almost like walking through a surreal museum, where each path could reveal something entirely different.

I did not know that the Initiation Well existed before our visit. After navigating the gardens, finding it was a pleasant and completely unexpected surprise. Rather than an ordinary well designed to collect water, it resembled an inverted tower extending deep into the earth. Its spiral staircase and underground setting reflected the philosophical and symbolic character found throughout the estate.

The view from the top immediately captured my attention. The circular structure drew my eyes downward through repeated arches, columns and levels of stone until the details gradually disappeared into darkness. I could not wait to photograph it. Before beginning the descent, I composed the image from above, knowing that the open view might become more difficult once other visitors arrived.

Walking down felt somewhere between descending into a basement and moving through a tower turned upside down. Sintra was warm and humid that June, but the stone interior felt increasingly enclosed as I moved farther underground. There were other visitors, although they appeared only sporadically, allowing me to explore every corner of the structure. From time to time, I leaned over to look upward or downward, trying to understand how deep I had travelled and how much remained.

What interested me most was not only the staircase or the depth, but the way time had altered the structure without weakening its presence. Moss had spread across the stone, settling into its surfaces and edges until the two appeared almost inseparable. What had once been carefully selected building material had gradually become part of a living environment.

The stone itself may once have existed somewhere entirely different. Human decisions brought it to this place: someone selected it, an architect imagined its position, and craftspeople transformed it into arches, walls and steps. Nature then continued the process. Moisture, moss and the passage of time introduced changes that could not have been completely planned, creating a new relationship between the constructed and the living.

For me, this image represents the idea that everything is connected. It is the result of materials, imagination, labour, nature and time converging in one place. Each decision and action created conditions for something else to follow. Looking into the well, I could see depth not only as physical distance, but as accumulated layers of ideas and consequences, a place where human intention and natural transformation continue to coexist, and where time and depth intersect.
